Desk Lamp

Assignment 2 Des 100

I will be designing an ideal lamp for a client. This assignment requires documenting my progress and creating two different types of prototypes. Those are visualisation and Specification Prototyping.

Brief:

Design the ideal lamp for Tyrone (my client). The lamp must have less strain on the eyes and not keep your brain/body feeling awake all the time so he won’t have a big struggle falling asleep. I will add different brightness settings so that light will have less effect on Tyrone’s eyes. Along with that, I will add some sort of Charging station for all the essential devices/products. The lamp to help keep the aesthetic of the simplicity of the desk area and monitor. The lamp must be able to plug into the wall.

Features

IMG_0047.JPG
  • One of the lamps main features I have included in the design is brightness settings by tapping the top surface of the lamp base. Tapping the lamp once will activate the lowest setting of light, the second time it's tapped will activate the middle brightness, third time the lamp will be at the brightest setting, by tapping it one last time the lamp will turn off.

  • The lamp will also tell you when you have been using it for a certain amount of time. e.g. after one hour in use, the light will slightly dim to a lower brightness and back to original brightness. This is to ensure my client can keep track of time spent on screen/study time and know when to take a break along with giving your eyes a break before headaches occur.

  • The Lamp’s able to bend into all sorts of positions to suit the client and ensure that the light is at the perfect angle for the different jobs/tasks at hand.

  • Wireless charging was a big request from my client alone, but they also want the wireless to tilt up, so they are able to use the phone while its charging.

USB Port:

Since Tyrone was wanting a place to charge some of his belongings. I have added the USB output at the back of the lamp, near the headphone stand. This is to ensure that the headphones can not only be held on the stand, but to also be able to charge with ease!

Wireless Charger:

By designing a wireless charger that can tilt up, devices charging can be used easily as requested. I cut out an oval shape in the support backing to experiment. My client was very intrigued by the look. “Adds a little more style to the lamp

Flexible Goose Neck:

The goose neck allows the user to angle the light to suit. This feature is one of my client's favourite parts about the lamp because it makes the lamp more versatile.

Final Lamp

Summary:

This final 3D model is a small-scale lamp that is multi-functional. It was designed as a request from the client, Tyrone. After looking at the workspace my client has I had a sense of how big or small the lamp shall be. On request, the lamp must fill the empty space next to the monitor while keeping a clean aesthetic finish. My client tends to get headaches quite regularly and feels “wide awake” most of the time.

After studying existing designs, finding some inspirations to help with the aesthetic, looking at the materials to create a clean finish and some changes to the design. I designed a lamp for my client who struggles to sleep and suffers from headaches from looking at the screen for long periods of time along with making the lamp have multiple functions that are useful to Tyrone.
